University of Texas at Austin Collaboration Meeting with the Central Texas Veteran’s Affairs Health System

On January 17th, 2008 a meeting was held between leaders at UT Austin, the Central Texas Veteran’s Affairs Health System, UTMB Austin Programs and Seton/Brackenridge. Hosted by the Clinical Education Center at Brackenridge, the one day conference brought together more than 50 decision makers representing these various systems. The meeting was envisioned as the first of a number of efforts designed to create and improve collaborative opportunities between the organizations.

The agenda combined presentations regarding current experiences with cross-system collaborations, current research projects with cross-system relevance and a discussion of how opportunities can be enhanced and expanded in the future. One goal of the meeting was to provide a forum for individuals involved in various research areas (neurosciences etc.) and for individuals more focused on clinical service delivery to have an opportunity to interact both within and across their current areas of focus. There was a consensus that there are many possible ways to work together to enhance clinical care, research and workforce planning.

A number of issues were identified that will be addressed by participants as this collaborative effort matures. It was acknowledged that data exchange and data security issues, moving research proposals through the respective Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), facilitating cross system faculty and staff appointments and creating incentives that can assist in incubating new collaborative opportunities are all issues that will need attention.
