Promoting Communicative Behaviors to Enhance Public Health: An Initial Exploration

Ye Sun, Ph.D.
Department of Advertising
The University of Texas

Health communication research has traditionally taken personal behaviors (i.e., quitting binge drinking or practicing safer sex) as the goal of change. Communicative behaviors, such as interpersonal advocacy (i.e., asking one’s friends to drink less) or participatory behaviors (i.e., helping in a community-based program), are an important route to enhance public health but has received little attention. In this presentation, I will talk about how we should and can take communicative behavior as the outcome variable in health communication research. Tailoring message design to promote such public engagement has practical implications for health communication campaigns.

The students of Dr. Brad Love helped design Ireland’s national H1N1 flu vaccine campaign. As part of a UT study abroad program, the students completed intensive research to provide insights being used in the Health Services Executive’s efforts to combat spread of the disease and promote vaccinations. The students provided particularly valuable information about how to best reach marginalized audiences and develop partnerships that can help work against health disparities.
